Pass the Women's Reservation Bill now!

Reservation Express gets huge support

29th May, Ernakulam (Cochin): 6,600 kilometers. That is how much we have traveled so far from Jhansi to Cochin where we reached this morning at 3 A.M. On our way, we have spoken to hundreds of thousands of people about the Women’s Reservation Bill. Consent, support and encouragement are what we have received mostly. Besides this, there was some confusion about the nuances and politics of the Bill, which we tried our best to clear as we went along.

In the city, our caravan members, including the drivers, were gifted with stoles. Our NFIW comrades organized for a big rally, something the place is accustomed to. We were almost 200 of us walking with banners and raising slogans. Musicians with traditional drums accompanied us all along. (Music can make all the difference!).

In the Achudanand Menon Hall, comrade Kamla Sadanand, State Secretary of NFIW, spoke with gusto about the urgency of passing the Bill which has been delayed for 14 years. She, and other speakers, highlighted that for a larger number of women to be part of India’s political process was a crucial test of its democratic roots.

Young caravan members (Sania is just 25) and Sultana (28) among others shared their caravan experiences and their respective motivations to be part of this truly extraordinary travel across the country.

God’s own country is also the lefties’ own country with more red flags than coconut trees. By the way, we have all been having our fill of coconut water, traditional Kerala cuisine and the drool-worthy sights. Sigh.
