Kannada song, Kashmiri lyricist, Punjabi food, Bengali land…
27th May, Siliguri: Delhi–Jhansi–Rewa–Daltonganj–Ranchi–Kolkata–Berhampur–Balorghat–Jalpaiguri–Siliguri. Phew! This is the circuitous route we have followed in the last seven days. Seems unbelievable even to us. Pinch us, someone! What made us realize the huge distances we have covered was the sight of the Himalayas as we reached their foothills in Siliguri today.
At the Uttar Bengali Marwari Bhawan, we were welcomed with garlands and bouquets. (Felt big and important). At the rather short notice of two-days, a few local organizations – Nari Utthan Samiti, Nari Shakti Sanstha, Bhairavi Sanstha – got together to host us in Siliguri. Not just this, they arranged for our stay and called for a large public meeting and press interaction. The discussion on the Bill was led by Seema Duhan and received cheering and affirmative responses. The venue was packed with people who looked at us curiously. Well, we are a mixed bunch from all over. Haseena from Kashmir shared her experiences of and motivation for the Reservation Express. The women from Karnataka belted a Kannada number. No one in the hall understood the song but they all applauded. Perhaps the song did not matter. They clapped for their spirit, joy and hope they carry.
Since songs can convey better, we sang a brand new song that has been written and composed by our own caravan member, Safir, who works with ANHAD in Kashmir! The theme of the song (no points for guessing) is the Women’s Reservation Bill. Since we are on the subject, Safir is also an impressive singer.
After the meeting, many of us were drooling—both at the scenery and at the sight of Punjabi food in West Bengal. Political campaigning can be so much fun, I tell you!
